Expectations – Staff, Students, Parents.
At APPS we seek to create an atmosphere which is positive and supportive and in which each child feels valued as an individual. We think it is important that students learn at an early age the importance of respecting people, their rights and feelings, property, both their own and that of others.
We have the following expectations of students :
Speaking and working with adults -
- All adults will be treated with respect.
- Always use the adults name.
- Always speak pleasantly
- Always use your manners. Manners are taught explicitly through social skills programmes.
Speaking and working with students
- Always use your manners and speak in a pleasant voice.
- Never put anyone down by teasing them or using bully tactics.
- Listen when others are talking.
- Respect others as people and treat them as you would like to be treated.
- Nobody has the right to interrupt teachers teaching and students learning
Appearance and personal hygiene
- Because students have to work with and therefore near others it is important that they are clean. Hair and bodies should be clean and odour free. Clothes should be clean and in good repair. It is important that clothes and footwear lend themselves to all school activities.
- Due to the risk of sunburn singlet tops, shoestring dresses or tops without t-shirts underneath are not permitted.
Property
- All students are expected to treat their own, the school’s and other peoples’ property in a manner that does not cause it to be damaged.
- Borrowed equipment including library books, readers etc must be returned to the correct place and on time and in good condition.
- Students are expected to bring a bag to protect their own and school equipment.
- You must seek and receive permission before using someone else’s or school property.
- Stealing will not be tolerated.
Confiscation of student property- To be taken for that day only and returned to the student at the end of the day. If dangerous, store it in a labeled envelope at the front office to be collected by the student at the end of the day. If not a risk then the class teacher keeps it locked away in their room until the end of that day. If it repeatedly comes to school then send it to the front office in a labelled envelope and ask the Front Office staff to call the parents to come and collect it from the school.
Presentation of work
- Presentation of work including the neatness of writing is a reflection of the effort applied to the given task. At APPS we expect all students to strive to improve their personal best for every set task.
Behaviour
- It is expected that all students will abide by the class and yard rules, which includes the acceptance of consequences.
- Students will always use their manners and move around the school causing minimum disruption to those working around them.
- Students are expected to strive to use their time constructively, by always being on task and not interfering with the learning of others.
Personal organisation
- Students are expected to take responsibility for their learning appropriate to age and development.
- This means they are expected to take responsibility for their belongings and to have what they need for each lesson when it is necessary.
- They are expected to be on time and do their best at all times.
- They need to be responsible for completing their work on time, including homework, and ensuring that it is available to be assessed.
Hats must be worn at all times when students are playing sport or doing daily fitness as well as at recess and lunchtimes. Students not wearing a wide-brim or bucket hat during lesson time will be asked to sit in the shade. At recess and lunchtime students not wearing an accepted hat will be asked to move to the Library. This is our designated sunsafe area. Students without hats who are still eating need to sit at the tables until they have finished.
Staff are responsible for checking that students have hats before going out for play periods.
Students without hats are in the shaded areas of the playground, as our designated sunsafe area It is not a punishment, it is to reinforce the Sunsafe message. Staff are to reinforce the message of “NO HAT, NO PLAY”
· APPS has a school colour code. The school colours are blue – navy and light blue. Students are encouraged to wear either the uniform or school colours. Track pants, dresses, pinafores, hats, t-shirts and windcheaters are for sale from the Front Office.
From time to time outbreaks of head lice occur within the school. If you notice lice or an abundance of eggs in a student’s hair, or excessive itching please send the student to the front office to be checked. If they find lice in the student’s hair then parents/caregivers will be phoned to collect the student and treat their hair. The student can return to school 24 hours after treatment. Minimal supplies of shampoo and fine toothed combs are kept in the front office. A note is sent home to all families in that class to alert them to the fact that lice have been found and to please check their own child’s hair. Parents are asked to inform the school when they find them at home so that we can inform other parents
SEE APPENDIX - fact sheet for more information.

Absences – Student & Attendance Policy.
ATTENDANCE POLICY - STUDENTS
1. All students who attend Augusta Park Primary School must be formally enrolled before entering a classroom. Exempted students are those on transition visits from kindy or students from SOTA who are visiting.
2. Students are required to attend on every school day unless a transition or attendance programme has been negotiated between Augusta Park Primary School staff, parents and necessary agencies eg. SBU, pre school, SEU.
3. Teachers need to be informed of the reason for student absence verbally or by a note so that roll sheets can be filled out accurately.
4. If a student has been absent for 3 days without reason the Ab. Ed. Team does a home visit or phones the family to find out the reason why. If the class teacher is unable to contact the parents they fill in the following Absentee form and hand it to the Admin/Aboriginal Education Team.

b) After 4 weeks of non-attendance the District Attendance Officer is informed.
· No student should be taken off of the roll unless a transfer advice has been received or the Attendance Officer has given permission to do so. This permission will be relayed to the class teacher by the School Counsellor.
· The AET will follow-up Aboriginal student Absences, the school Counsellor will follow-up Non-Aboriginal students.
Ø Students order their lunch at the canteen before school starts at 8:40am
Ø Lunches are placed in a square plastic crate for each class.
Ø Each class sends 2 students to the canteen area. They sit on the green benches and wait for the canteen staff to give their lunch crate.
Ø These are to be returned to the canteen when the bell to go out play is rung. Students who have ordered ice creams or bottled drinks need to take their lunch bag to the canteen to collect this after the bell to go out is rung.
Staff are not responsible for administering medication. This is the responsibility of parents. Occasionally teachers will be asked by parents to administer medication. It is your decision whether you wish to accept this responsibility. However a nominated SSO will supervise students taking their prescribed medication (ADHD tablets, inhalers or antibiotics) daily. Students are to go to the front office for this as consent and documentation regarding dosage is kept there. Daily records are kept and signed after each student has taken their dosage.
Keeping of inhalers by students may be negotiated teachers and parents, providing that it is clearly labelled, including the student’s name. Teachers need to be aware of the legal implications of misuse.
The following policy applies to all school personnel, visitors, volunteers and contractors and is based on a set of values shared by teaching staff and the Governing Council.
Rationale
Students, parents and teachers are accessing telecommunications technology in increasing numbers. Our core business of teaching and learning needs to be conducted in an environment free from unnecessary distraction or disruption. Therefore the school discourages the bringing of Mobile Telephones to school by students but we accept there are times when it might be deemed important. We are therefore prepared to allow them on the premises only within the parameters of this policy and only when it is deemed necessary by parents.
Expectations
Students
v A written request/notification be submitted by parents to the Principal explaining the need for the mobile phone to be at school.
v Students remain responsible for all of their personal effects while at school. Mobile telephones are brought to school entirely at the owner’s risk. The school will not get involved in disputes and/or investigations over damage, loss or theft.
v Students are not to have mobile phones in their possession during school hours. The phone needs to be handed to the school office staff at the beginning of the day and collected by the students at the end of the day. Students and staff will both sign the mobile phone in and out of the school.
v If these procedures have not been followed, the phone will be confiscated from the student and the parent will be asked to collect it from the school office.
PARENT CONTACT TO STUDENTS
Parents are not to contact students by mobile phone. If parents/carers need to urgently contact a student they should contact the school through the Front Office. We will then contact and support the student as necessary. Fixed phone outlets are available in all classroom or foyer areas for urgent messages to be left for the teacher in classrooms. We can confidently assure callers that messages received prior to 2:45pm will reach their destination.
TELEPHONE CALLS TO AND FROM STUDENTS
Any telephone calls made by students during school hours must be made via the front office.
Parents, visitors and contractors
v All users are to switch their phones to mute or discrete when in public areas, including meetings, interviews and classrooms.
v Personal mobile telephones are brought to school at the owner’s risk and the owner remains responsible for all of their personal effects while at school. The school will not get involved in disputes and/or investigations over damage, loss or theft.
All parents and visitors are to take and make mobile calls outside teaching and learning areas.
Exemptions from the expectations of this policy can only be approved by the Principal and then only in exceptional circumstances.
The APPS Fund-raising Committee is a sub-committee of the Governing council, and as such is responsible for reporting their activities to them.
All class based fundraising activities must have approval from RMG /Management. Classes are limited to 3 fundraising activities per class or a limit of $500.00
APPS School Council meets three times a term on the second Tuesday night of each month at 7:00pm.
Council consists of a member of Leadership (Principal), two staff members, parents and caregivers.
Staff representatives are responsible for presenting a brief staff report – this is compiled by asking staff to jot down a few points of focus for the coming weeks. This is typed up and presented to Council.
In order for Council to go ahead a quorum must be present, 50% + 1 (total members). Meetings usually last for 1 ½ hours and cover a huge range of topics and issues.
Hot Weather -
Ø If the weather forecast from the night before is 38°C or over then students stay inside for the whole of lunch. Use the same supervision roster as you do for wet weather. The Front office staff will phone for an update of current temperatures at 12:00 o’clock.
Ø Should a cool change arrive before lunch the Principal or Deputy will inform all staff that normal playtimes will resume via a communication memo sent around to all staff. Please tick or initial it so that we know that it reached you.
Ø Ratification of the Hot Weather Policy by the Governing Council will occur annually before implementation.
Early Dismissal-
Ø Where the temperature exceeds 38°C, parents will be given the option of taking their children home at 1:00 pm. Parents are asked to notify the school in writing or by phone.
Ø If on a day where the temperature doesn’t reach the predicted forecast above 38°C, parents will be able to leave children at school if they wish.
Ø Given that classes usually modify their learning programs during extreme heat it is probably not appropriate for work to be sent home with children, unless those remaining are going to do the same work. Perhaps suggest reading or your normal homework contract.
Ø This policy needs to go to school council for ratification annually.
Issue No.4 Date Feb/03 Review Date Feb/04.
Wet Weather-
Ø In wet weather, students are not sent out to play. If the students are already outside when it begins to rain, a bell rings three times to indicate that students must return to their classrooms. When the rain stops three bells will ring to indicate that students may go out and normal play and duties resume.
Ø In case of wet weather the Principal or Deputy or delegate will be responsible for ringing the bell.
Ø Student Supervision – a roster should be organised within unit groupings, mindful of the previous duty commitments for that day. Teachers working in single units are released by the Principal, Deputy, AET, Counsellor or Resource Centre Manager.
Ø Once the wet weather bell has been rung this is the procedure followed. You are most welcome to take your own class for fitness, fresh air when the designated lunch time is over. You will be responsible for the supervision of your own class.
Assemblies are a chance for the whole school to celebrate successes and receive information about issues relating to the efficient management of the school.
Whole school assemblies – held fortnightly in the Quadrangle. In terms 1 - 4 assembly will be held at 9am Thursdays.. Thursdays will be assembly days unless adverse weather exists then it is the next available day
Ø Proposed agenda is
– Welcome (Yr 7 Representative)
- Revisit rules/expectations (Administration Team)
- Last Weeks News (Yr 7 Representative)
- This Weeks News (Yr 7 Representative)
- Sports news (Yr 7 Representative)
- Awards and Recognition (Administration Team)

Ø As part of Rewards and Recognition, ‘Goodness I’m Good’ certificates are drawn by a parent audience member. Students can earn these certificates by completing work to a high standard in the classroom. Yard Support Team members are encouraged to reward students with these certificates for displays of positive play. These certificates are placed in a bin located in the front office.
Ø One Program Achieve award is given for each class. The award needs to identify the student’s achievement in one or several Program Achieve Foundation Areas: organisation, persistence, resilience, confidence and getting along with each other. These certificates are hanging in the staff room. Each class teacher is responsible for filling these in.
Ø Unit assemblies- to be held in when the need arises.
