The library has developed a reading room for the school to easily access readers. The theory being that the children will have a much larger selection to choose from. The children quickly got used to the routine of selecting and borrowing books with reception class getting it down to a fine art in just a couple of visits.
The other major direction the library has taken is focusing on the accelerated reading, with a section of the library dedicated to books that we have A.R quizzes for. The students that can't access the curriculum computer network from their classroom's come to the library to take A.R quizzes of books they have read. Students are permitted to borrow one library book and one A.R book at any one time. The benefit of the A.R books is that they range from "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" to "Harry Potter". Giving the students a huge range of reading matter where their comprehension of the books can be accurately monitored via the tests taken after they read the books.
This combination of Reading Recovery and the Accelerated Reader program has proven to be very successful with students making leaps in their reading comprehension and importantly reading at levels that are appropriate to the individual student.
2008 was the 8th year Accelerated Reading has been used to support the reading development of students at Augusta Park Primary School. The program supports students at their individual reading levels, and encourages them to develop their comprehension skills with computer quizzes and by gradually increasing the challenges presented in books. Students? enthusiasm for reading is high, and they are becoming very independent in managing the whole process.
Students have borrowed 11,569 Take Home Readers from the Reading Room.
